Summer Events Intern Job Description:

The Summer Intern is an essential member of the 48th Ward Aldermanic Office. They coordinate and execute summer community events with other staff members and the alderwoman. Summer events include but are not limited to the Andersonville Farmers Market, Edgewater Farmers Market, and Argyle Night Market.

They will receive and investigate complaints, questions, and concerns from constituents and work with ward staff and city departments to seek a resolution. They will be responsible for communicating with various stakeholders via the phone and email. The Summer Intern will work closely with other staff members in the office and provide support to colleagues and constituents by assisting in daily office needs and communication.

This role is part of the Aldermanic Summer Internship program for 2024. The ten-week program is scheduled to start Monday, June 3, 2024, and run through Friday, August 9, 2024. The salary is $15.80/hour. The internship is 35 hours/week plus one hour for lunch for a total of 40 hours per week. 

This position is expected to work onsite in the aldermanic office and at ward events. The Summer Intern reports to the Neighborhood Services Coordinator. The Summer Intern hours are as follows:

  • 9-5pm Monday - Friday on Non-Market Days

  • Mondays 1-8pm on Andersonville Market Days (May 15 - October 23) 

  • Wednesdays 1-8pm on Edgewater Market Days (June 3 - Sept 30)

  • Thursdays 3-10pm on Argyle Night Market Days (July 11 - August 29)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinate and attend summer events in the ward on behalf of the Office of the Alderwoman. Responsibilities include but are not limited to volunteer recruitment, table/tent set-up and tear down, and address constituent concerns. Summer events include but are not limited to the Andersonville Farmers Market, Edgewater Farmers Market, and Argyle Night Market.  

  • Assists individuals with concerns, inquiries, or complaints and determines the best plan of action. Provides assistance to residents relating to the navigation of the City of Chicago’s bureaucracy. 

  • Uses the city’s 311 database to input government service requests and look up statuses of existing requests.  

  • Maintains records regarding inquiries, complaints, and correspondences, along with follow-up actions.

  • Works closely with the Director of Neighborhood Services on a variety of issues in the 48th ward and provides support where it’s needed.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Reside in the City of Chicago.

  • Ability to work in a face-paced, multi-faceted environment with many challenges and opportunities.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database management.

  • Ability to work with a broad array of stakeholders including constituents, elected officials, community representatives, advocates, government agencies, etc.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with sensitive and difficult situations.

  • Bilingual preferred.

  • Highly responsive public servant. 

  • Access to a car and ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
